New York State Route 249 (NY 249) is a state highway located within Erie County, New York, in the United States. It runs east–west across southwestern Erie County from the shores of Lake Erie in the town of Farnham to the hamlet of Langford in the town of North Collins.

Route description

Route 249 begins at an intersection with NY 5 (also known as the Seaway Trail) in Farnham. Route 249 heads to the southeast, then to the east, and southeast again as Commercial Street. Much of the region in southeastern Erie County is mainly is farmland and residential, and the highway crosses much of this. Route 249 intersects with U.S. Route 20 and crosses over the New York State Thruway. After the Thruway, Route 249 loses its Commercial Street designation and passes eastward through fields and homes. The highway intersects with Erie County Route 9 (former southern terminus of NY 323) in Brant.[3]

Route 249 crosses through a small forest as Brant-North Collins Road. At the intersection with Versailles Plank Road, Route 249 turns to the north along the route. The highway quickly turns off onto Brant Road and continues eastward. Route 249 crosses over a stream and becomes concurrent for 23 feet (7.0 m) in North Collins with U.S. Route 62. Route 249 turns in a different directions and turns onto Langford Road and heads into Langford, where it terminates at NY 75.[3]

History

NY 249 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. It initially began at U.S. Route 20 (now NY 5) in Farnham and ended at NY 18 (now U.S. Route 62) in North Collins[1] even though the portion of modern NY 249 east of North Collins was also state-maintained as well.[4] NY 249 was extended east to its current eastern terminus at the hamlet of Langford by the following year following the assignment of NY 18A (now part of NY 75).[5]
